Linaras, 12th day of Gildember, 2008
Afterwatch Hour rising 0 ![]() Skirmish on the Vingaard Riverby Sticko, Staff Writer Solamnia - Reports have flooded in this morning of a small battle at a ford of the Vingaard River a few days ride north of Vingaard Keep. The entire 4th legion Assembled on the fields of Vingaard keep this week. The legion then split into its 3 cohorts and marched north and south along the Vingaard River. It would seem strange that they would be scouting the boarder of Nightlund, but all reports say that they were looking for safe crossing points. Rumours have been circulating that perhaps the empire seeks to expand into the dark land that was once part of the empire before the first cataclysm. The third cohort of the 4th legion was near the old highway bridge which is now no more than a ford. When they were set upon by a large force of goblins, the legion was still crossing the ford in column when the attacks hit rear of the column still on the Solamnic side. With the large force attacking the rear of the cohort the commander of the 3rd cohort Lady Cassandra Blacktree knight of the Sword, ordered the centuries that had already crossed to the Nightlund side back across the Vingaard River to deal with the marauding goblins. It was in the midst of the fighting that Sir Alric Uth Gartin Knight of the crown and commander of the 17th century spotted a second force attempting to crush the cohort in the ford. So leading his Century of light infantry Sir Alric formed a rear guard to allow the cohort to cross and deal with the first attack. Sir Alric's rear guard managed to hold up a superior number of goblins until a force of heavy infantry from the 13th century and a group of white robed wizards could reinforce the beleaguered rearguard. The 3rd cohort suffered minimal casualties due to the action of Sir Alric who helped prevent a disaster and not only save the lives of many men but allowed the 3rd cohort to achieve a victory they might not have had otherwise. Emperor Markham released this statement when the report reached him today "Sir Alric Uth Gartin Knight of the crown has shown the type of gallantry that the knighthood strives to achieve so it is with great honour that he is awarded an imperial citation of courage". However neither the Emperor nor any officials would comment on the reason that troops would be seeking to cross the river, nor would they comment on why the legion had a large contingent of white robed wizards with them. |
