Eye in the Crowd - A Troubled City and Its Citizens

Palanthas - The mood in Palanthas has been at best a somber one lately. What with the likely departure of the large majority of the city's dwarven merchants, the apparent threat of gigantic ice glaciers encroaching ever closer to Palanthas, and the constant threat of violence in our ports. The citizens of Palanthas have little to celebrate. Indeed some would say that it's long been since the city has had any good news.

The Herald receives reports of violence, theft, and civic malcontent at a staggering rate. So often in fact does the Herald report on the criminal activity in Palanthas that an argument could be made that the populace at large has become desensitized to it all. In times passed crimes and the criminals that committed them were purged from this city as quickly as the smithy shapes iron, but those times are no more. It seems the sun has long set on any dreams of an ideal society.

In spite of all that Palanthas is growing in leaps and bounds and that begs the question what is it that continues to draw people to our walls? Refugees and pilgrims of ever race, creed, and color flock to this city at an alarming rate. So the Herald wants to know...

Why do you call Palanthas home?

Kaye Adams, street sweeper:

"I came here 3 years ago from a small farming community just south of the city. Our family farm was burned to the ground, and my father murdered by a group of bandits. So really at the time we came here because we had no other choice. I mean, even though many horrible things happen in this city many more terrible things can happen to you outside its walls."

Hakum Lighshade, an elven refugee:

"My people are adrift in this world. We are without nation, home land, or flag. Simply put, I came here alone some months back in search of my kind. Elves flock to this as a last bastion of hope. It's easiest to gather and reform something of a community here. So home is here in Palanthas. For the time being."

Douglas Carmaux, life time resident of Palanthas:

"I was born here, and here I will die. I love this city as I love my family. I have seen it burnt, under siege, and nearly raised to the ground. Over those years it would appear to have grown weak to all onlookers, but I say nay! It has grown ever stronger. We are a melting pot of races now, and our diversity makes us closer than ever. Some don't realize that yet, but when we find ourselves pressed we will stand as one."
