Second Watch falling 18 ![]() Eye In the Crowd - Common Only Please!by JOSHUASIGEP44, Staff Writer Palanthas - Does your mouth water at the idea of full body ale? Maybe you've been to Palanthas' own Dead Dwarf Inn and had a few there. Next time you go, keep in mind that your Common better be up to par if you want to order yourself one of those ales. The Dead Dwarf, a landmark in Palanthas, has a sign asking customers to order in Common or nothing at all. The sign is sparking a fair bit of controversy in the Cityhome. Many non-common speaking races are calling for a ban on the Dead Dwarf. Others are activley trying to close the Inn altogether. In what has become common place those people seeking the closure of the Dead Dwarf are doing so via a petition that is garnering support daily. Meanwhile, mere days after the sign went up large groups of various races have begun to gather in front of the Dead Dwarf Inn with signs of their own. The signs are written in each race's respective language, but their messages are easy enough to decipher So the Herald wants to know... "What are you feelings on the matter?" Jargo Malpeth, owner of the Dead Dwarf Inn: "This is Palanthas - when ordering speak Common. The sign is intended to encourage immigrants to learn the language and assimilate into society. Besides I'm not making these folks come here. If you don't like me or my place go somewhere else. And another thing those draconians out there are getting out of hand. They have been harassing my customers all day." Durton Stinebrekaer, dwarven stone mason: "I think what's coming out of his mouth is racist. He is saying, 'I don't like these folk in my community and I will do everything I can to get them out of there. I love it when people with immigrant backgrounds adopt this mentality. How quickly we forget our past. This is my city also." Harpers Tightrope, displaced Silvanesti Elf: "Saying that immigrants should learn Common because it will make their lives easier is one thing; Common only and making a language a requirement for patronizing a business is quite another. Also, I'm pretty sure there was a time, not long after this man's family immigrated to Palanthas, in which their Common skills were seriously lacking and they too had to resort to using their native tongue to communicate. The same is such with the recently arrived immigrants. During that time, there were all kinds of anti-Ergoth sentiment, much like the anti-immigrant sentiment of today. Sounds like hypocrisy to me." |
