Editor's note: This week will start a two-part series on the taverns of the Cityhome. Andley Haverlock reviews Palanthas finest dishes and the taverns that serve them.
The Cannons of Palanthas
Location: In the middle of the Merchandising District on the Knights High Road
Open: Always
Quality of Service: 3/5
Quality of Food: 3/5
Review: This favourite hunting ground of the Palanthas City Watch (also owned by them) was recently opened to the public. The atmosphere is pleasant and bustling and the food relatively cheap. Service is efficient, and that's as much as you can say about it. For a military tavern the food is surprisingly refined. I'll definitely come here again.
Specials: The Not Dragon Heart. This is an interesting dish. The menu claims that once upon a time a golden dragon came here to eat and found the tavern serving Dragon Heart. Enraged by this mockery he demanded that the name be changed into a truthful form. The dish itself appears to be a large meaty organ of an unidentifiable animal. The taste would suggest something exotic, but closer inspection reveals it to be in fact several entwined boar hearts.
In Addition: The tavern has a bulletin board full of all kinds of assignments posted by the guards and anonymous employers whose identities are protected by the guards.
Hallowhand
Location: Just west of the Temple of Paladine
Open: Noon to dusk
Quality of Service: 4/5
Quality of Food: 4/5
Review: Owned by a creepy looking former aesthetic of the Great Library called simply Ren (who would scare even ogres away just by looking at them) this is nevertheless the choice of the local clergy. The ambience of the place is pleasant and refined, with immaculate sky blue table linen and an abundance of discreet waiters. Time doesn't seem to exist here as you relax, lean back on a chair with sumptuous cushions large enough to please a minotaur, a glass in hand, and admire the high beamed ceiling filled with amazing paintings. There's a small range of fish and meat dishes but Hallowhand's real glory is in the innovative way it treats vegetables. And not only are they wonderful to eat, they are of fantastic value.
Specials: Greeten is a vegetable plate that looks like a miniature garden and tastes like the finest wine (I kid you not).
In Addition: Ren is always looking for new vegetable recipes and will pay hefty sums for ones that he deems worthy.
