Sky CitadelsArticle written by UzielThe Sky Citadels are an invention of the Gnomes of the Spire Mountains, that combined both magical spells and items to raise great floating structures in the sky. The Sky Citadels were somewhat reminiscent of the Flying Citadels seen on Ansalon during the War of the Lance. Shortly after the Great Destruction, a faction of gnomes decided that it would be safer for their race if they could live above the earth, rather than upon it with all the other races. This faction undertook to create entire towns on mountain, as well as all sorts of mechanical controls and devices. Engineers and excavators were brought in to work on the mountain, whilst machinery and magical items were installed to enable flight. The mountaintop was then undercut and mined out, until the sky citadel would hover in the air. There were many early disasters and only a few successes, which led to the Sky Citadels project being abandoned. Only seven Sky Citadels were ever attempted and brought to the construction phase. One was destroyed in a volcano, another shot into space and never returned, another was caught in a storm and sent crashing to ruin in the realm of Hylo, another crashed on launch, and two were actually successfully completed and are still used. The final citadel was begun, but the project was abandoned and the half excavated mountain of Mount Whiterock was left. References
