Harlad the GrayArticle written by Uziel
Harlad the Gray (? AC – 424 AC) was a male Minotaur who was well known as a pirate throughout most of Southern Hosk. He actively plundered ships across the Tiderun Strait as well as several of the inland seas of Taladas. The minotaur had been raiding ships for several decades and over time had formed agreements with many of the local lords to not enter their waters and to also police the other pirates, in exchange for "protection money". Harlad was described as an average sized minotaur, with silver fur and was missing his right horn, that was presumably lost in some long ago battle. During the Age of Despair, Harlad was known sometimes as "Haralt the Grey", and had an agreement with Count Ricar of Malton, who he provided some of his bounty to, in return for safe harbour. At this time, he commanded five vessels and had over one hundred minotaurs and Human pirates under his command. In 424 AC, he came across the merchant ship White Worm and took its riches, which included the statue known as the Hooded One. The merchant, Sammek Thale reported the raid to Barreth Forlo, lord of Coldhope Keep, who then confronted the pirate at Lamport. Harlad told Barreth of Sammek's less than honest dealings, and also gave him the gift of the Hooded One. Barreth allowed Harlad to go on his way unhindered. Only a short while later whilst his ship, Blade of Sargas was in open waters, the Moon-Thief Shedara stole aboard and confronted Harlad about the Hooded One. However the shadow-kender of the Faceless Brethren had also gotten onboard and begun slaughtering the crew in search of the statue. Shedara convinced Harlad to tell her who he had given the statue to, in returning for allowing her to kill him quickly, than leave him in the hands of the shadow-kender. Shedara mercifully cut the pirate lord's throat, so he was dead before the shadow-kender could reach him. References
