Sir Vercleese uth Rothgaard is the Deputy Sheriff of Solace. A former Knight of Solamnia, he retired honourably after serving out his full debt to the Measure before taking up his current post. He is missing his left arm, presumably from an injury received in his days as a knight.

The Deputy is old and grizzled with a wry sense of humour, but is popular among Solace's inhabitants – although he thinks Elves are "slippery creatures". Vercleese was the one Mayor Palin Majere trusted to carry a message to Gerard uth Mondar in Southern Ergoth, inviting him to come to Solace as the new Sheriff of Solace. Vercleese is very protective over Sheriff Gerard, perhaps because he could not protect Sheriff Graylord Joyner, Gerard's predecessor, from being murdered. He assisted in solving a couple mysterious deaths, and even took a knife wound in his armless left shoulder protecting Gerard.
