War Memorial

Article written by Ambro

The War Memorial is a monument constructed on Schallsea. It is located on the eastern side of the Barren Hills about a half a days walk from the Silver Way. The monument is a blue crystal obelisk that is about ten yards wide on each of its four sides and stands on an earthen terrace that is about twenty yards in diameter. The terrain around the monument is clear for about a hundred yards in all directions.

The obelisk is made of the same crystal as the domes as the Citadel of Light. Each side of the obelisk has an inscription written in four different languages: Abanasinian Language, Ergothian Language, Estwilde Language, and Solamnic Language. The inscription reads: "In memory of battles fought and loves absent, May we never forget that which is dearer."

When the sun sets the obelisk explodes with various colors. As the sun drops lower the obelisk releases its colors in ghostly fireworks. After sunset, ghosts appear near the memorial. The ghosts are of people that died by wars. They are called to the War Memorial and visitors are unlikely to see the same face twice. The ghosts will talk to each other and to the visitors. Most are not hostile and if met with aggression they will fade away.

War of the Lance

During the War of the Lance, the Blue Dragonarmy invaded Schallsea to make it a base for its operations. The Qué-Nal fought back with the help of Shirlinn. The battle that then occurred happened at the location that would one day become the War Memorial. It was here that the Dragon Highlord Kartilann was killed and the shaman Shirlinn.

The half-elf merchant Shen Korras saw the battle while hidden in the hills with his family. When a sniper arrow killed Kartilann, her mount Khellendros went on a rampage on the island. During this carnage Korras's family was killed.

Building the Memorial

In 399 AC, Shen Korras had the War Memorial built on the site. The workers and sculptors did the work out of the goodness of the hearts. Many pilgrims to the Citadel would detour there and the Knights of Solamnia would give lectures there about the War of the Lance there.

Return of a Highlord

Around the year of 411 AC, the ghost of the Kartilann began to haunt the War Memorial. Her spirit and others became increasingly hostile and few would visit the site.

War of Souls

After The Great Storm in 421 AC, Kartilann's spirit no longer haunted the War Memorial. It is unknown after the War of Souls finished if her spirit returned the site in Schallsea.
