Courtyard

Article written by Uziel

In the Upper Reach of Icewall Castle lies a large courtyard, which is part of the original design of the keep. On the northern wall of the courtyard is a large storeroom, filled with a mound of peat and is used as a weapons store for the castle. The storeroom also houses the entrance into the Secret Way in and out of the castle.

The southern part of the courtyard lies buried under a giant snowdrift, however two caverns have been burrowed into the snow, which have since become the living quarters for thanoi and the few minotaurs living in the castle.

The southeast part of the courtyard is filled by a large watchtower that rises to dizzying heights above the castle, although following the Cataclysm, it became choked with ice and can only be ascended to a height of forty feet. Stairs also lead below the tower into the Lower Reach; however again ice blocks descending the stairs to any great degree.

In the absolute centre of the courtyard is a free flowing fountain. The properties of the water are clearly magical, given that the fountain has not frozen in all this time. The fountain contains healing properties, however the water loses it properties when removed from the fountain itself. Two streams run off from the fountain, leading to a downspout that flows downwards into the Lower Reach of the castle.
