GnollArticle written by Ambro
Gnolls are a race of scavenging hyena-like people. They are nocturnal by nature. Gnolls have clawed fingers and fur all over their bodies with thick manes. Often they join armies or mercenary companies due to their warlike nature. In their homes they tend to not attack groups that are stronger than them. Gnolls are reputed to be a race created from Goblins by the Graygem. Packs are usually ten to twenty in number and are usually led by the strongest male. The pack usually has two males for every female. Every female "belongs" to the leader, but there are smaller family units within the pack. When several pack share a territory the packs form a hierarchy based off the strength of each leader. There has been at least one exception to this dynamic with a strong female leader of a rather large tribe with the gnoll known as Charka. There are rumors that once every few years a gnoll is born with the ability to think tactically. These gnolls normally become the leaders of their pack. Gnolls also fought on the side of the Dark Queen during the War of the Lance. Gnoll LandsGnoll packs live in the swamps of the New Swamp, the swamps along the Vingaard River, and the swamps near Flotsam. There are also nomadic packs in the Plains of Dust. The gnolls of the Desolation are more jackal-like than hyena-like. They have dark fur and narrower heads. They formed alliances with Malystryx. In 391 AC, a slave ship The Hope of Kothas wrecked and a number of surviving slaves made it to Schallsea. Some of the survivors were gnolls. The gnolls settled there and have occasionally commenced in raids on the Citadel of Light. Kender TalesIt was once stated that a Solamnic report said Lord Toede captured some gnolls for servants, but this information is likely untrue since the gnolls near Flotsam were part of his alliance.
