Hederick meets the Seeker priest Tarscenian and reads the Praxis, learning of the Seeker religion. He helps Tarscenian to prove that his mother's god Tiolanthe is a false god, and receives visions from Sauvay, a Seeker god. Hederick orchestrates the death of his mother and the destruction of the village of Garlund.
