Filthy rags, sharpened spoon, a length of yarn, a pocket full of rat meat, and a clay mug.
Physically, Murance is a terrible sight to behold, and he knows it. His teeth have all been smashed and are now rotting in his mouth, his face carries scars from massive beatings, and his fingers and toes have all been broken multiple times and have mended poorly. They are therefore pointing in directions which healthy fingers and toes obviously wouldn't. As a final touch Murance has had the pointy parts of his ears cut off. Maurice is ashamed of his mutilated appearance and will try to hide his face behind his greasy blonde hair. His blue eyes seem distant, as if he is always focusing on something far away. Mentally, the torture has turned Murance into a broken man. He never speaks unless he has to. Even if someone does manage to get him talking he will refuse to answer any question to anyone he doesn't recognize as a 'fellow' Legionnaire. His diet of water and rat meat has rendered him gaunt, malnourished and foul smelling. Indeed, Murance may live if he escapes Dark Haven, but he will not live well.
Murance was born in 8 SC, which makes him 31 years old at the time when he is encountered. Being the son of a Qualinesti elf woman raped by a Dark Knight, he grew up in Qualinesti while it was under the tyrannical regime of Beryl. As a half-elf it is safe to say that he never had an easy time making friends anywhere. To the Dark Knights he was just another elf and to his elven peers he was a living symbol of the Dark Knight's oppression; a bastard child that simply shouldn't be.
When the elves fled Qualinesti Murance followed. When the elves reached Silvanesti, only to find out that it also was occupied by Dark Knights, he left and travelled to Ak-Khurman. Here things changed. For the first time in his life he was not looked down upon because of his mixed heritage, and some of his new friends even shared his dislike for the Dark Knights that had made his life miserable since before he was born. Those friends happened to belong to the Legion of Steel. Murance liked everything about the Legacy and the Legion and without second thought he decided to join up to avenge the fate of his people. However, it proved to be more difficult than Murance expected. His friends were all low ranking members of the Legion of Steel, but the higher ranking members he was introduced to felt that he was too immature and hot headed to join, fearing that he would be a liability to their operations. Furious, and desperate to prove the Legion recruiters wrong, Murance disguised himself as a human and joined up with the Dark Knights at their nearest station, hoping to get access to valuable intelligence and prove his worth to the Legion. However, he was soon discovered as a half-elf and taken to the fortress of Darkhaven for interrogation.
In Darkhaven, Murance foolishly refused to say anything at all and was tortured reputedly under the suspicion that he knew something important. Even when he cracked and told what little he knew the torture continued for hours because the torturer simply couldn't believe that the idiot half-elf had endured so much pain for such insignificant information. Murance was eventually thrown back in his cell, where the Dark Knights intended to starve him to death or he remembered something relevant. Murance however, did well in prison. He learned to kill rats for food with a sharpened spoon attached to a length of yarn and gather water in a clay mug from a crack in the wall.
