Knotwood has a full head of long bushy red hair. It combined with his darting hazel eyes and scampering gait gives him the appearance of a humanoid squirrel. Knotwood handles everything, if he takes a liking to it he'll pick it up. Often he picks items up simply in the name of "I may need that later." Some people have likened this to a squirrel's obsessive need to gather nuts and store them away for the winter. It is an apt description of Knotwood
As a child Knotwood lost his sight temporarily due to an allergy to Blackthorn Tea. As he lay in bed with a compress on his eyes, Knotwood was reassured by the chattering of the squirrels scampering about in the trees. He developed an almost obsessive reverence for the small animals and once his eyes healed would often be found high in the trees playing with his friends.
Knotwood is something of a disappointment to his afflicted kender parents. They both served nobly as scouts in the rebel army of Alhana Starbreeze prior to the War of Souls. They parents died when the rebels were caught between the ogres and the shield, leaving behind he and his two sisters. They were still too young to travel when his wanderlust period set in; so he entrusted them to a young kender couple bound for Hylo. His sisters look up to him, or at least they did before he "abandoned" them. His family is respected by those that once served in Alhana's rebel forces, but other elves tend to look down on them.
Knotwood's family earned the ire of a Silvanesti lord and his family when Knotwood was accused of stealing a necklace from his residence. Knotwood was captured and publicly humiliated by the Silvanesti lord leading to his parents thinking him a disgrace. The Silvanesti lord still harbors a grudge and occasionally hires assassins to kill the kender. With squirrel-like reflexes and an extraordinary amount of luck, Knotwood has thus far avoided such a fate.
Knotwood was inspired by my recent purchase of Secrets of the Squirrel. Items marked with an * can be found within those pages. Secrets of the Squirrel
