Daneel takes his job as Guardian of the Citadel very seriously. He is a staunched believer in the work of the Citadel and supports the mystics and clerics there in any way he can.
Daneel followed his father in becoming a soldier when he was young, a choice that he has regretted ever since. He was ordered to attack some peasants who were begging to be spared from the high taxes his lord was imposing on them. Seeing that this was an evil act, Daneel aided the peasants and almost died. A mystic from the Citadel of Light saved him, pulling him from the bodies and healing him.
The mystic told Daneel that men with such convictions and heart as his could contribute greatly to the mystics in the Citadel of Light. Thankful to, and impressed by the mystic, Daneel travelled to Schallsea intending to join the mystics and learn the power of the Heart. However, when it came time for him to ascend the Silver Stair, he found that he couldn't.
