Dirge has scars running down through her left eyebrow and continuing down her cheek from a clawing of a mountain lion when she was a teenager. Her left eye is milky white, the way it appeared after the attack when it was useless. She was healed by a cleric of Takhisis, but the capricious and cruel goddess left it looking ruined.
She has long dark hair, is trim and athletic and is five feet eight inches tall.
Dirge was born amongst the plainsmen of Abanasinia and her parents named her Starsong. She grew to be a stunningly, beautiful young woman, not just beauty of the flesh, but also of the soul, for was also courageous and kind. Starsong was the favourite of many of the young men of the tribe, but she had eyes only for Blackwing, the handsome charming second son of the chieftain. Before long they were engaged, with the marriage to be held on Starsong's sixteenth birthday.
Five days before the big ceremony the young couple snuck away to the hills for a few precious moments together, but disaster struck. A hungry mountain lion found them, Blackwing, showing his true colours, turned to run and presented with such obvious prey, the mountain lion pounced. Starsong, ever brave and armed with only a small flint dagger, stepped between the hungry predator and her betrothed. Starsong managed a fatal blow to the creatures throat, but it swiped her face once as they fell to the ground ruining her left eye and tearing her face.
Blackwing, her betrothed, revolted at the sight of her and ashamed of his own actions abandoned Starsong, fleeing back to the village, heedless of her plaintive cries for help. Starsong in terrible agony, made her own way back to the village, only to find hell waiting for her. Blackwing had spread a story about Starsong, saying that she had used witchcraft to ensnare his affections and when he had finally freed himself of the enchantment in the hills, that she had summoned the mountain lion to slay him for scorning her. According to Blackwing's story, he fought the great cat and wounded it so horribly that it turned back on Starsong paying her back for enslaving it.
Starsong instead of getting married, was placed on trial, her people taunting with the name she would later take as her own "Dirge". Starsong was so heartbroken she refused to defend herself, however, before the inevitable verdict was handed down she escaped making one stop before leaving her people forever. As she crossed the plains, the warriors of her people far behind her, she left her "betrothed" in a condition that would mean he would be of no use to any other woman ever.
Taking up the life of a mercenary, Dirge's talents as scout eventually attracted the notice of the Dragonarmies, in particular an ambitious officer in the blue dragonarmy, one Kitiara Uth Matar, who hired her as her personal scout and had a cleric of the dragonqueen restore sight to her left eye.
Dirge, now a sullen, morose loner, works as the chief scout of Bluelady, she has no illusions as to how far she can trust her employer or anyone, but the money is good and she enjoys her work, at least as much as she enjoys anything these days.
