Important Sites
1. Town Hall. This is one of the largest buildings in Jansburg. It is big enough to seat everyone in town (barely). Twice a week Mayor Rupert Lennart (Male Civilized Human Noble 4) and his council meet to hear concerns of the townspeople. The council is composed of five members drawn from the wealthiest families of Jansburg, of which Mayor Lennart is part. The Lennarts by virtue of having lived in the town longer than any other family, has the distinction of residing in the Mayoral Manor, and has since a few years after the Cataclysm. Once per week a magistrate from Solanthus holds court and hears disputes.
2. Shrine of Light. The Shrine of Light is one of the oldest buildings in Jansburg. IT has been inhabited and abandoned many times during its long history. After the Cataclysm, the people of Jansburg put the remaining clerics to the torch; blaming them and their gods for the devastation caused by the Fiery Mountain. During the War of the Lance, new clerics would inhabit the building tending the shrines of the Gods of Light, most of these clerics fell during the Chaos War. The ones that remained left the shrine when the gods left. The Shrine would not stay empty long. With the discovery of mysticism, the Shrine of Light would again be inhabited by people of faith tending the shrines in the memory of the lost gods. It might have fallen empty again when magic started to disappear were it not for the leadership of Marten Kiristan (LG male civilized human Cleric of Kiri-Jolith 3). He remained when many others had given up. When the gods returned he was one of the first approached by Kiri-Jolith and became one of the first new clerics. He and two acolytes tend the Shrine of Light.
3. Lockhammer Forge. This is a small forge tended by Finlay Lockhammer (mountain dwarf Expert 5/Master 2) formerly of Garnet-Thax. He specializes in locksmithing, though he does have a few common and masterwork items for sale.
4. Flannan Ferry. Cogman Flannan (male civilized human Mariner 3) runs a ferry service. It closes at sunset and does not open again until first light. Cogman is a former member of the Palanthas Navy
5. Restful Retreat Inn. This quiet little is run by Monika Helleran (female civilized human Mystic of Restoration 4). Monika was only a child when the Gods left. At an early age she discovered within her the ability to perform mystic magic. Though her parents could barely afford the cost of passage aboard a ship, Monika was sent to the Citadel of Light to develop her abilities. She enjoyed her time at the Citadel, but longed to discover what had become of her family. Monika paid for her passage to Solamnia by serving as a healer aboard a Solamnia Warship, the Kingfisher's Trident. In Palanthas, she learned that her parents still resided in Jansburg. A traveling tinker took her from Palanthas to Jansburg, where she was reunited with her parents. They had done well and were proprietors of the Faithful Rest, which Monika inherited upon their passing two summers ago. The Faithful Rest is a cozy little inn. Monika has not forgotten her humble heritage and will provide rooms and meals even for those who cannot pay.
6. Ottoman School of Sorcery. Konstantin Ottoman (CG male civilized human Sorcerer 6/Academy Sorcerer 2) was once an instructor at the Academy of Sorcery. When magic began disappearing a few years prior to the War of Souls he decided to retire and settled down in Jansburg. When magic returned to full strength after the War of Souls, Konstantin knew that there would be those requiring instruction in how to wield the wild sorcery at their disposal. He opened a school to teach these students using the techniques he learned and taught at the Academy of Sorcery. Konstantin charges a nominal fee for his tutelage but will not turn away a student if they can't afford it. Currently, he has six students.
7. Jansburg Keep. This squat two-story stone building has seen much use over the years. Built after the 3rd Dragonwar, Jansburg Keep has been home to many groups; currently, the building is used to house the Town Watch. The first floor includes a spacious barracks big enough for the 11 men who call the building home, but can accommodate up to 100 people; such as during times of heightened security in which the militia is activated. The offices of the Sergeant of the Watch, and the Sergeant at Arms, as well as the Armory are located on this floor. The Captain of the Guard's, private quarters and office are on the 2nd floor, along with the private quarters of the Sergeants. Most of the time, the members of the watch take their meals at the Restful Retreat. There is a sub-basement where the dungeons are located. Violent offenders are housed here.
8. Constable's Office. Constable Barnabas and his deputies are charged with keeping order in the town of Jansburg. Vester Barnabas (NG male civilized human Warrior 4) is an ex-member of the Palanthas Guard who migrated to Jansburg nearly 20 years ago. He has been constable for the past eight years. Vester left the Palanthas Guard when that group became little more than a tool of the Dark Knights during the early Age of Mortals. Vester has the support of the townspeople who respect his fairness. He is willing to overlook small infractions and is especially lenient with youngsters whom he often lets off with a stern lecture. The constable's office includes four 10 ft cells for housing prisoners. Especially violent offenders are turned over to the Town Watch and are imprisoned in the dungeons of Jansburg Keep.
History
Jansburg is a very old town. It has existed since before the Third Dragonwar, and was founded by a Solamnic Knight named Jan (pronounced Yawn) Silverlake, a Knight of the Sword. Jan was given the land as a reward for loyal service to the Knights of Solamnia. Originally the town was little more than a few scattered houses, lived in by his closest relatives. Over the years the town grew from a small hamlet to a small town. Being far from population centers didn't attract many people, but for those that found Jansburg; it offered a nice alternative to the hustle and bustle of cities like Palanthas.
The land would remain in the Silverlake family until after the Cataclysm. In the aftermath of the Cataclysm, the Knights of Solamnia were reviled for their inability to protect the people. In a single night the Silverlakes were driven from the Mayoral Manor and their ancestral lands taken by a vicious mob. Rather than fight for a mere piece of land, the Silverlakes did what many other knights of the time did; they disappeared. Rulership of the town was given by the people to the Lennart family, which rules it to this day.
