Hand of Takhisis

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

Entry in the 2007 Holy Artifacts Challenge

The Hand of Takhisis at first glance appears to be a ring with five colored gemstones; one each of red, blue, green, black, and white - one each to represent the five chromatic dragon clans. When the ring is put on it forms into a guantlet of blackened steel etched with intricate details on it. Each finger of the guantlet is in the shape of the head and color of a chromatic dragon in this order: little finger- white dragon, ring finger- green dragon, middle finger- blue dragon, pointer finger- red dragon, and thumb- black dragon. In the palm of the glove is a small purple gem with an etching of each color going to the appropriate dragon head.

The Hand, as it is referred to by clerics of Takhisis, protects its wearer from the breath weapons possessed by the five chromatic dragons (acid, fire, lightening, poison gas, and freezing) and also protects him from those effects in nature. When worn and the wearer grasps a person by the forehead, with the thumb and the little finger at each temple, the wearer can probe the victims thoughts or send him through unbearable torture from the Dark Queen. The Hand also allows its wearer to use each of the dragons' breath effects (only one at a time) by pointing with the hand and saying the color of the dragon. It then sends out a cone, of course not as powerful as a dragon's breath, of the desired breath weapon.

The Hand was fabled to be cast into the Abyss itself after the Cataclysm, yet returned into the possession of Takhisis's clerics when Takhisis returned. After the death of Takhisis, the powers of mind probing and torture were lost but the power of the dragon heads remained. It was said that if it was worn by any person not a follower of Takhisis, the glove would grasp them by the head and release all of the dragons' breaths at once upon him.
