The Eye of PaladineD&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rulesby Umari SolanthusNote: This magic item was an entry in the Holy Artifacts Challenge. The Eye of Paladine, also known as the Eye of the Silver Dragon, is a powerful artifact that dates back to the Age of Might. The artifact looks like a large disc made of silver. One side of the medallion is embedded with the image of Paladine—an image that changes depending on which race looks upon it. The other side of the medallion appears blank except when its magic is invoked, where the image of a great eye appears on its surface. The Eye was known to protect the wearer from harm against evil monsters and followers of the evil gods, such as Takhisis. It would protect the wearer from the effects of the Abyss, allowing them to move freely without being harmed. A wearer of great spiritual strength could even use the Eye to allow the god Paladine to speak through them—a power that was rarely used and caused considerable strain to the wearer's voice. Anyone who used this ability would often lose the use of their voice, never to return again. The Eye of Paladine was a sacred artifact to the elves during the Age of Might. Often it was passed down through the High Priests in the temples of Paladine. The Kingpriest later claimed it after an elven priestess carrying the pendant was killed on her way to Istar. The Kingpriest housed the medallion within the Hall of Sacrilege, forbidding all but his highest priests to enter. Although the medallion was in his possession, he never used it. The Eye became lost when the Cataclysm struck. After Paladine stepped down as a god most of the medallion's powers became lost. A person of strong spirit and energy, who, like those of the orders of mages, would sacrifice anything for the use of its power, could only invoke its powers of protection again. This would be very dangerous to the wearer of the medallion, as over time the strain of using the medallion's power over and over again would break and shatter their mind and body.
