Accanthus

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Tauren Kai-Jere

Accanthus

An accanthus is a child of the forest who was abused during childhood, whose arboreal traits grew twisted and violent because of all of their rage and resentment. Such a creature looks like any other child of the forest but as additional powers fueled by its tainted nature. Accanthus assume a tree-like form and are capable of channeling their anger into the plant-life around them, driving it to choke and ensnare other creatures. They are dangerous and wild creatures.

Creating an Accanthus

"Accanthus" is an inherited template that may only be used upon humanoids with the child of the forest template (hereafter known as the "base creature") of non-good alignments. Apply the child of the forest template first, then modify based on these traits.

Size and Type: The creature gains the plant type.
Special Qualities: An accanthus has all the special qualities of a child of the forest, in addition to the following:
Tree Form (Su) Once an hour, as a full round action, an accanthus can transform itself into a tree-like creature with bark-like skin and gnarled thorny branches in place of limbs. The accanthus can only maintain this form for as many rounds as its Constitution score before it becomes fatigued and must revert to its natural state. This fatigue lasts for an hour, after which point it can transform itself again. In this form it gains the following:

  • Damage reduction 5/slashing.
  • Double Damage Against Objects (Ex) An accanthus that makes a full round attack against an object or structure deals double damage.
  • A slam attack that does 1d8 points of damage plus Strength bonus x1 1/2.
  • A trample attack that does 1d8 points of damage plus Strength bonus x1 1/2.
  • Resistance to cold 10.
  • Vulnerability to fire.
  • Immune to critical hits, mind-affecting effects, poison, sleep effects, sneak attacks, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.

Spell-Like Abilities: 1/day - entangle Caster level is equal to character level.
Challenge Rating: As child of the forest +1.
Level Adjustment: As child of the forest +1.
