Tome of the Trusting Soul

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Krain Bloodwun

There are rumors of a book that was penned by Raistlin Majere, called the tome of the Trusted Soul. In the time he served Takhisis Raistlin wrote the book. The book is undetectable as far as locate items are concerned. Some say that the book has hundred of spells penned by Raistlin. If a wizard who searches for the book is a Trusted Soul then the book will find him or her, just as the Tower of Wayreth finds wizards. All the wizard need to do is pledge his life to Raistlin Majere, and call to the tome of Trusted Soul on the eve of the Night's Eyes. On that night there is a fourth moon that can only be seen by the Trusted Soul, the Golden Moon.

This black leather bound book with Golden Hourglass marking on the Spine contains about three hundred pages. Any reader trained in reading magic will find a small dictionary of magical words intended for an apprentice wizard. Many notes are made in reference to other readings for any aspiring wizard from alchemy to herbalism. A complete study of the book contains but one spell, read magic, and the rest of the book contains magic words that any low rank wizard about to take the Test would know. If detect magic is cast on it the book radiates very low magic on it, further study of the book will find protection from the elements. Raistlin had made the book during the time he was serving Takhisis. The book was passed around to other wizards; as it happens, Raistlin was in search of an apprentice but not any apprentice. The Candidate needed to hunger for magic yet be loyal, able to learn and willing to break traditions that hold normal wizards back.

The book was given to Dalamar to help increase his understanding of the magical language. After reading the book Dalamar put it on a shelf, feeling somewhat insulted by the contents of the book. Dalamar reasoned that this was Raistlin's way of saying he knew nothing about magic and therefore must be retrained. After event that followed Raistlin attempt to become a god, Dalamar became Master of the Tower of Palanthas and opened it for other wizards. One half-elf wizard, Abarail, took the Test and become a Red Robe.

Abarail was not one of the brightest wizards Dalamar had met – she barely completed the Test with her life resulting in her jaw being broken, which would take several months to heal. In order to speed her recovery, Dalamar gave her the spell book that Raistlin had given him. Thinking ironic as Raistlin thought that this Abarail knew nothing about magic and needed to be retrained. Several years later Abarail sold the book fetching for it more then it was worth because the book was penned by Raistlin hand 7000 steel pieces.

The book does contain an additional property. Raistlin has cast on the book a Trusted Soul spell. The trusted soul was designed to allow the caster to know if an individual could be trusted. The individual must meet these requirements:

  • Must have taken and passed the Test.
  • Must have an intelligence of at least 17.
  • Must have researched a spell not approve by their respective order i.e. white robe learning a black robe spell.
  • Must have researched a spell that would be labeled as a renegade spell.
  • Finally, the wizard must pledge his life to Raistlin Majere.

Upon doing so a powerful spell is released, and the caster bounds his/her soul to that of Raistlin own and then the wizard hears the voice of Raistlin ask the wizard to swear an oath to never teach his the spells or forfeit their soul.

Then page of this book would change and detail various topic of Chronomancy; in particular, casting through time and the following spells would added to the read magic spell. The book also has the intelligence of 19 and can help wizards' research spells.

The following spells are known at the 28th caster level: Secret Page, Greater Teleport, Non Detection, Seeming, Sending, Dispel Magic, True Seeing, Scrying, Screen.

As a standard read magic spell, but this spell can be cast through time. For every level of the caster, the spell can be sent 1 day into the past or 1 day into the future. In addition to the time which must be known by the caster, that caster must also know the location of the target. The Raistlin's read magic spell travels through time and reaches the target base on the caster familiar with the target, time and location

Reading Magic through Time
Familiarity On Target Off Target Lost Backlash Time Storm
Very familiar 1-80 81-86 87-97 98-99 00
Studied carefully 01-70 71-81 82-92 93-96 97-00
Seen casually 01-60 61-71 72-82 83-93 94-00
Viewed once 01-50 51-61 62-72 73-83 84-00
Never seen 01-40 41-51 52-62 63-73 74-00

There is a chance the spell may not arrive as intended. The following is an explanation of the table and other possible effects. Note the principles of this spell can be applied to other spells.

On Target: The spell reaches its target for the normal duration of the spell (in this case acting as a read magic spell on the target).

Off Target: The spell reached the area but was off target. Target gets a +2 verse saving throw that apply fort, will or ref.

Lost: The spell is lost and did not make it through the time travel. The spell may have been intercepted or is otherwise missing – the exact result is unknown to the caster.

Backlash: The currents of the River of Time have corrected the River and returned the spell. This creates a backlash of temporal energy inflicting 2d6 points of damage per spell level carried (minimum 2d6 for a 0-level spell). Note: Temporal energy in this form would be raw and magic resistance would not apply.

Time Storm: The currents of time have momentarily weakened creating a temporal storm that centers on the caster. The storm covers a 20-foot radius and inflicts 2d6 points of temporal energy damage to all in the area. In addition the caster must make a Will save or lose consciousness. Time storms can also open gate to other planes of existing, when spell carried are of 5th or higher. These gates are formed in random places beyond the caster's control and can open in any time in which the caster can affect in terms of time, range, past or future. Once open they remain as such for one day per caster level and allow time travel from the point in time in which the spell was cast to the point in time where the gate was opened. All creatures that use the gate take 2d6 points of damage from temporal energy per spell level carried.

The caster can attempt to close the gate premature by stepping through the gate. Doing so the will close gate, throwing the caster 1d10 feet, causing additional 2d6 temporal energy damage per level carried. Dispel magic and greater dispel magic do not work.

The reason is that the gate, while triggered by magic is not magical and therefore can not be controlled by dispel magic. The caster is not able the cross through time using the gate he created, while creatures and other beings can step through the gate coming or going. The gate can also be closed if the caster dies. Once the gate is closed, creatures who have not returned through the gate are trapped unless they have other ways of traveling through time.

Since most likely the target will be caught off guard by this spell, the target received a saving throw and magic resistance if applicable. Even if the caster is casting it on him or herself at a different time creating paradox in time.

Guild line for the other spell: note that higher level spell can carried lower level spell as well but have an increase in temporal range. For example, an 8th-level read magic would inflicted damage as a sixth-level spell even though the actual spell been carried was a first-level spell.
