Champion's Belt

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Kendermage

Lore

Characters with either Knowledge (Religion) or Knowledge (History) can gain the following information:

DC 20: The Champion's Belt was created by minotaur craftsmen and blessed by priests of Sargonnas specifically for the Clash of the Champions tournament held annually in the minotaur capital of Nethosak. The belt is said to be able to boosts its wearer's skills for a limited amount of time each day.

DC 30: The belt is protected Turok, a powerful minotaur spawned in the fires of the Abyss at the behest of his lord Sargonnas. Turok is connected to the belt and he knows when someone has failed to return the belt to Nethosak for the next Clash of the Chmpions.

Description

The Champions Belt is constructed of red iron plates and the buckle is in the shape of a Condor. To those who are unworthy of the belt it has its full normal weight and is very heavy. To a worthy champion the belt is weightless.

The Champions Belt is a recent creation of the Clergy of Sargonnas at the behest of their god. Sargonnas himself commissioned the belt and decreed that only one who proved himself worthy of the belt could wear it. It was unveiled at the first ever Clash of the Champions in Nethosak. Sargonnas believed that the minotaur needed a new symbol of honor and had the belt constructed.

Activation

The first time a winner of the Clash of Champions dons the belt, the player of the character determines one ability score which will then become the ability score associated with the Strength of Honor special ability. For example, a rogue character who wins the tournament might declare that Dexterity is the ability score associated with the Strength of Honor ability. From then on, whenever Strength of Honor is activated, the rogue gains a +4 bonus to his Dexterity for the duration of the special ability. The ability score is determined as soon as the player character puts on the belt and cannot be changed until after a new winner of the Clash of the Champions has been found.

The powers of the belt function for one year. After one year its abilities go completely inert and the Champion is honor-bound to return the belt to the Grand Arena in Nethosak and must again prove his worth in the Clash of the Champions. Failure to do so curses the wearer inflicting a -4 to Charisma and attracts the attention of Turok (LE half-fiend minotaur fighter 12), a powerful servant of Sargonnas sworn to protect the belt.

Activating the Strength of Honor special ability is a free action.

Effect

The wearer of the Champion's Belt receives a +4 bonus to any Diplomacy and Intimidate check made as long as he wears the belt.

Furthermore, three times per day the wearer can boost one ability score (see above), granting her a +4 morale bonus to the ability score in question. This bonus lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the wearer's Charisma modifier.

The belt cannot be stolen, given away, lost, or forcibly taken from the Champion. Should one of these things occur the belt will reappear within 1d20 hours on its own or it can be mentally commanded to immediately return to the waist of the Champion. The only way the belt can change hands is for the Champion to be defeated in the Clash of the Champions.

Aura: Medium transmutation
Weight: 50 lbs.
