Crown of the NamerD&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rulesby Uziel & Joe MashugaCrown of the NamerMinor ArtifactLong ago in the Age of Dreams, twelve Tribal Crowns were forged by the god Reorx and given to each of the Plainsfolk tribes. The crowns were given to the Namer of each tribe, who the spiritual leader and cleric of sorts. Each of the crowns was imbued with a glain opal, which allowed the wearer to communicate with the other Namers, and also to recall every piece of Plainsfolk history to relate to their people. At this time, rumors circulated that a thirteenth opal existed that could be placed into any of the crowns and allow the wearer to have power over both life and death. During the course of the Ogre Wars in the Age of Might, all of the tribal crowns are destroyed or lost, except for the crown of the Que-Nara tribe, which is stolen by the exiled Namer known as Firebrand. The sole surviving tribal crown becomes known as the Crown of the Namer and is revered as a holy artifact by the Plainsfolk. When it is later recovered from Firebrand and the Que-Tana, it is returned to the Que-Nara people and borne by their Namer. The strength of the crown is dependent on the number of glain opals, or godseyes, that are placed within its thirteen sockets. If at least six glain opals are set within the crown, the wearer can cast each of the following spells as spell-like abilities once per day as a 15th-level spellcaster: clairaudience/clairvoyance, detect magic, detect thoughts, discern location, and scrying. The crown wearer can also cast sending at will, as a spell-like ability, at any creature that also possesses six (or more) glain opals. This ability was used by crown wearers to communicate with one another, but was largely rendered useless after the loss of the other crowns. If the naming crown is set with twelve glain opals, the crown's spell-like abilities (except for sending) become usable three times per day. In addition, if the wearer uses the crown for no less than a year's time, he gains a +2 inherent bonus to his Wisdom score. The crown is said to bestow even greater powers to those who place a thirteenth glain opal in the crown's centerpiece, but the extent of this ability has never been fully realized. The outcast Firebrand briefly came into possession of this power, but it is believed that he was slain before he could comprehend the abilities that were given to him. It is rumored that a fully socketed crown gives its wearer some degree of power over life and death, as well as an ability to steal memories from others.
