Alchemy of DragonlanceD&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rulesby Kipper SnifferdooBladderwrackThe sailors of the Blood Sea have long known of type of seaweed known as bladderwrack. The seaweed is comprised of brown flattened strap-like fronds lined with a number of internal bladders aligned centrally along the length of the frond. Each bladder holds trapped deposits of purified air. Chewing on the weed releases the trapped air. Once collected, the bladders of the seaweed can be removed and gathered in bunches. Gaspweed: The bunched bladders of the bladderwrack are sold on the market as gaspweed. This herb is used by sailors and explorers to extend the duration of the time they can spend underwater. A mouthful of gaspweed acts like taking a deep breath. It effectively extends the person's ability to hold their breath by the 2 rounds per point of constitution from the time they imbibe the herb. Alchemy DC To Create: 15 Dragon's ClawThe Dragon's Claw is a plant that grows around the roots of trees in dry woodlands throughout the temperate climes of Ansalon. The dark brown, branched, toothed, coral-like underground rootstocks sends up thick green stalks that bear flowers in the late summer to early autumn months. The hood-like flowers are reddish or purplish on the outside, paler and flecked with purple lines on the inside. The petals of the flower shape the image of a talon. Spidergum: The thick stalks of the Dragon's Claw contain a viscous fluid that can be mixed into a thick tacky poultice. The paste can be applied to a person's hands providing a +2 alchemical bonus to Climb checks. (Also decreases the chance of a person loosing the grip of their weapon.) The effectiveness of the spidergum can be neutralized with sand or by removing it with wine or alcohol. The effect of spidergum last one hour before it dries up. Alchemy DC To Create: 25 RaktangIn the dense rainforests of Northern Estwilde is a tree known as the raktang. This tree stands 20 to 30 feet high with slender branches and pale bark. The leaves of the raktang are dark blue green and have rounded tips. Small red capsules of pollen, which look much like berries, are set at the base of each cluster of leaves. The natives of Estwilde collect the pollen for a number of different uses ranging from dying clothes to curing tapeworm. The capsules give off a particularly pungent odor. Stink Balm: Poured into alcohol or wine and boiled the potency of the pollen's stench increases significantly. The bottled concoction is so powerful it can even rouse men from an unconscious state. The mixture is so powerful that smelling it can even break the enchantment of some magic spells. Inhaling the balm allows a second saving throw against mind-influencing affects. (Gully Dwarves are immune to the affects of this concoction.) Alchemy DC To Create: 15 EyebrightAlong the banks of the New Sea grows a wild scrub foliage known as Eyebright. It is an attractive, delicate plant, growing 2 to 8 inches tall. Commonly found in dry pastures, especially in chalky soil. In the summer months it produces tiny purplish-red or white flowers variegated with yellow. Eyeguard: The traditional use of eyebright is to create a compress made with a spoon full of the dried herb combined with water and boiled for ten minutes. The undiluted liquid is used as a compress after cooling. In addition to soothing eyestrain, eye inflammations, stinging, tearing, and other ailments of the eyes eyebright can be processed into an ointment known as eyeguard. Applying eyeguard to the eyes grants a +2 alchemical bonus vs. gaze attacks. The effect of one dose of eyeguard lasts 1 hour. Alchemy DC To Create: 25 Black HawThis deciduous shrub found in the temperate regions of the continent can reach almost 16-1/2 feet in height, with its branches spreading upward. The leaves are dull-colored, finely toothed and nearly 3 inches long. The flowers are quite noticeable, somewhat large, and appear in nearly-topped heads between 3 and 5 inches in width. Bright red berries appear in the summer months. Serene: The berries of the black haw can be dried and crushed into a fine powder. When properly prepared the powder can be used to create a substance known as serene. Serene is primarily used as a muscle relaxant. Imbibing one dosage of the powder reduces fear effects by one category. The affect is not cumulative with multiple doses. (Kender have an adverse affect to this mixture. They do not gain the beneficial affects to it.) Alchemy DC To Create: 15 Fan RatingsThis item has been published here with permission from the author(s) and may not be reproduced without permission.
