Despera's Deadly Daggers

Level: Sor/Wiz 6
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Area: The caster, or a 20-ft. burst centered on the caster
Duration: 1 round/level or until hurled
Saving Throw: Reflex half
Spell Resistance: No

This conjuration brings forth a hail of dagger-like blades that spin erratically around the caster. The blades spin near the caster, but do not hamper spellcasting and are considered to be in the caster's occupied area. The blades provide several protections.

First, this spell grants the caster a +6 shield bonus to AC. This bonus does not stack with other shield bonuses, such as from the shield spell or an actual shield. Also, every ranged attack (excluding magical ranged attacks such as Melf's acid arrow) has a 75% chance of being deflected by the spinning blades.

Second, any creature that attacks and successfully hits the caster takes 10d4 points of slashing damage from the spinning blades. This happens on each successful attack, so if a creature hits multiple times in one round, they take the damage on each successful hit. The attacking creature can attempt a Reflex save for half damage on each attack. If the caster grapples an opponent, the victim takes 10d4 points of slashing damage each round the grapple is maintained. A grappled opponent does not get a Reflex save.

Finally, as a standard action the caster is able to hurl the spinning blades out around himself. This affects everyone within 20 feet of the caster. All creatures in the area take 5d4 points of slashing damage, with a Reflex save for half damage. The spell ends once this occurs. Since hurling the blades is a standard action, the caster cannot cast the spell and hurl the blades in the same round.

Material Component: One masterwork dagger, which multiplies to several hundred blades that spin around the caster when the spell is cast. The dagger blades disappear when the spell effect ends or the blades are hurled by the caster.
