The Sword of Balif

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Darthsylver

The Sword of Balif was originally crafted by elven weaponsmiths commissioned by the Silvanesti king, Silvanos, as a gift for his trusted friend and general, Balif. The sword is crafted from dragonsteel and its hilt is shaped like an eagle in flight with an emerald clutched in its talons at the base of the hilt. The eagle's eyes are made from two rubies on one side and two red tears on the opposite side. Balif never let the sword out of his sight for an instant and had the sword even at the battle of Gargath Tower. History is unclear at this point in that some say Balif was changed into a kender by the Greygem, while others say that kender were created from gnomes. Regardless, what is clear is that Balif lost his sword sometime during the battle and was never able to recover it. Like many other things, the sword itself was also affected by the Greygem and transformed into a living intelligent weapon.

When it was crafted, the sword was a +3 keen defending flametongue of speed. Due to the materials used in its construction, the weapon has a +2 natural enhancment bonus that works in non-magic areas. The sword only weighs 2.5 lbs instead of the normal 5. After being awoken by the Greygem the sword gained Intelligence 19, Wisdom 10, and Charisma 19 and is Lawful Neutral. The sword has darkvision, blindsense and hearing out to 120 feet. It can read and speak Common, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, and Kenderspeak and can also read magic. The sword can communicate telepathically with its wielder. The sword continually generates a deathwatch effect and may use detect magic at will with a duration of 22 minutes. The sword may use bless weapon three times per day with a duration of 21 minutes. The sword may also cast bless three times per day with a duration of 22 minutes. The longsword's owner may use discern location once a month even on items the owner has not touched, as long as the owner has a clear mental picture of the item. Once per day, the sword may create a ring of fire similar to a wall of fire that lasts 22 rounds once the sword stops concentrating on it. Three times per day the sword may cast haste on it's wielder that lasts 21 rounds. The longsword was also bestowed a special purpose to defeat all of the wielder's enemies and when it is used in such a manner, the sword grants a +2 luck bonus to all attacks, saves and skill checks that last until the wielder is no longer engaged in such action. The weapon has an ego of 35.

Caster level 20th: faint enchantment and necromancy, moderate transmutation and abjuration, strong evocation and divination.
