Dragon Slayer

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Zabraxus

The evil of the Dragon Overlords is but the latest in a series of draconic monstrosities that have tried to destroy Krynnish life. Over time, many have risen to fight these creatures of evil - the most famous are Huma and Magius, and the Heroes of the War of the Lance. However, many have heard the call of the dragon slayer, through divine prescience or after losing a friend or loved one to their evil. Dragon slayers are most deadly against the chromatic dragons, but draconians also learn to fear these stalwart warriors.

Fighters and Solamnic Knights make the best dragon slayers - their combat abilities make them already fearsome in melee. Barbarians, clerics, monks, and rangers also hear the call, and can use their unique abilities to challenge their draconic foes - especially rangers, who can have dragons as a favored enemy. Bards, mariners, nobles, and rogues can also find the abilities of this prestige class useful, although they might struggle to meet the prerequisites. Druids, mystics, sorcerers, and wizards are least likely to take this class, as it does not help their spellcasting at all.
Hit Die: d10.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the dragon slayer prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Dragon slayers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, all armor, and all shields (including tower shields).

Immunity to Dragonfear (Su): All dragon slayers are immune to dragonfear. In addition, all allies within 10 feet of the dragon slayer gain a +4 morale bonus on their saving throws against dragonfear. If the dragon slayer has the aura of courage ability, this radius extends to 20 feet and gives the dragon slayer's allies immunity to dragonfear.

Detect Dragons (Sp): A 1st-level dragon slayer can detect dragons and draconians at will. This functions as the spell detect animals and plants, except it shows all draconic creatures and their colors instead of all animals and their health. The character's caster level is equal to his dragon slayer class levels.

Minor Dragonbane Weapon (Su): At 2nd level, any weapon that a dragon slayer holds is considered a magical weapon for purposes of bypassing draconic damage reduction. They also gain a +4 bonus to saving throws against the death throes of a baaz or kapak draconian.

Minor Elemental Resistance (Sp): At 3rd level, the dragon slayer can make himself resistant to draconic breath weapons. Once per day, the dragonslayer can choose an element (acid, cold, electricity, or fire) and gain resistance 15 for 10 minutes per dragon slayer class level. This works against any fire, cold, etc., but is most often used against dragonbreath.

Minor Draconic Spell Resistance (Su): At 4th level, a dragon slayer has learned to become resistant to the arcane energies often used by dragons and draconians. The dragon slayer gains spell resistance equal to 10 + his dragon slayer class level. This spell resistance only functions against draconic spells and spell-like abilities. The dragon slayer can raise or lower his spell resistance as a free action.

Grounding Strike (Ex): By 5th level, the dragon slayer has enough experience fighting dragons and draconians that they can, as a full round action, attempt a grounding strike. After 2 rounds of studying the draconic target and doing nothing else (except movement), the dragon slayer can make a single attack at his full base attack bonus. If he fails, he cannot try another grounding strike until the dragon slayer has spend 2 more rounds studying the draconic creature. If his attack succeeds, the dragon takes damage and must make a Fortitude save (DC 20 + Str modifier + dragon slayer class levels). If the dragon succeeds, he is unable to fly for 1 round per dragon slayer class level. If the save is failed, the dragon takes no damage but cannot fly until it has rested for 1 hour. If the dragon slayer's grounding strike is a critical hit and the dragon fails the saving throw, it is unable to fly for 1 hour per dragon slayer class level.

Major Dragonbane Weapon (Su): By 7th level, the dragon slayer has improved his martial ability to the point where his weapons are deadly to most dragons. In addition to bypassing a dragon's damage reduction, any weapon wielded by a dragon slayer gains the dragon bane special ability. The weapon also becomes immune to the death throes of baaz and kapak draconians. If the dragon slayer already owns a dragon bane weapon, the weapon deals an additional 1d6 points of damage.

Major Elemental Resistance (Sp): At 8th level, the dragon slayer has endured many attacks and lived through them all. His elemental resistance ability increases to a resistance of 30, but is otherwise identical to minor elemental resistance.

Major Draconic Spell Resistance (Su): Upon reaching 9th level, the dragon slayer's spell resistance increases to 20 + his dragon slayer class level.

Dragonslayer (Ex): At 10th level, the dragon slayer is an expert at killing all creatures draconic. He gains his own frightful presence, whereby dragons and draconians with less Hit Dice than the dragon slayer must make a Will save (DC 10 + Cha modifier + dragon slayer class levels) or become either panicked (if the target has less than half the dragon slayer's Hit Dice) or shaken (if the target has more than half of the dragon slayer's Hit Dice) for 4d6 rounds. The dragon slayer's frightful presence ability has a 50-foot radius and is always active against chromatic dragons and draconians.
