Istarian Great HelmD&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rulesby DamienThe Istarian great helm came about at the height of Istar, when religion was not the only thing that became flamboyant and elaborate. Armour, too, became more showy and expensive. The Istarian great helm is a fine example of this armouring style, not nearly as boxy as normal great helms; the Istarian great helm has an angled, sloping design that is not only beautiful in form, but provides better protection than a standard great helm. Along with the standard bonuses and penalties for wearing a great helm, characters wearing the Istarian great helm gain a +1 deflection bonus to any slashing attacks due to the angled sweeping design of the helm, which is able to easily turn aside blades and arrows.
