The First Sorcery Academy of Krynn

D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rules

by Darthsylver

Primal sorcery has been a part of Krynn since the dawning of time. This source of immense power has seen few incarnations throughout the continent of Ansalon (the dragon stones, the graystone, the scions, and of course, the three, wild-talent elf mages of the Lost Citadel) at least before the time of mortals. On Taladas, however, it is as common as any other source of magic.

Primal sorcery returned to Taladas through the 13 exiled scions of Reorx's chosen. These exiles "wandered for years" after being set adrift from Ansalon's Nordmaar coast. During the thirteen years of sailing, the Scions learned to wield the wild magic. Upon landing in the black water swamps of Taladas, they remained hidden in secret and lived well for 254 years. During this time, the scions slowly created their own small society, so that the thirteen became over three dozen. Due to changes brought on by the Graystone, the Scions become a long-lived race and are unusually resistant to disease. After the scions learned how to "control" primal sorcery, the original thirteen exiles unanimously agreed to return to Ansalon to teach their fellow chosen how to control primal sorcery. These thirteen eventually became the first Wizards of High Sorcery.

The scions on Taladas, using their sorcery to spy on events in Ansalon, witness the depths of wrath the people of Ansalon can achieve. The Taladasian colony refused to submit to the laws of magic simply to escape the wrath of a population on another continent. It was decided that eventually Ansalon would learn of the Scions existence and hunt them down. The colony left the swamp village and moved into the plains of Taladas, eventually building a civilization that would shame even that of Istar. They called it Empire of the Aurim.

The Aurimian empire built many schools throughout the empire, all a part of the "Academy of Sorcery." It was here that young scions learned how to draw power from the earth to create wondrous magical feats and creations. During this time, emissaries were sent to Ansalon to rescue those branded as renegades by the Orders of Magic and, if they so wished, bring them to Taladas. With them they brought the knowledge of Wizardly magic. So as to perpetuate understanding of magical theory, this new magic was taught at all the schools throughout the land. The "renegades" were welcomed into society and have their own families and children. When a Wizard and a Scion have children, the child or children, generally have an innate talent for magic and sorcery and become known as Sorcerors.

For generations, the Empire of Aurim flourished and many legends of their great deeds arose. Unfortunately, the Kingpriest of Istar brought down the fury of the gods. The impact from the mountain falling on Istar caused a huge chunk of the mountain to fling itself toward Taladas. As the Aurimians cared little for the affairs of the religious orders of Ansalon, they were caught unprepared for the hurtling stone coming their way. When the mountainous chunk fell, it landed in the capital city of the empire, killing hundreds. The impact of the mountain, however, was nothing compared to the release of magic caused by the death of so many. Magical shockwaves riddled the land, magical creations exploded, and a great wound opened up in the ground so that the very earth, itself, bled. The Empire of Aurim was no more. So into the pages of history, myth, and legend, passed all knowledge of "The First Academy of Sorcery."
